Biomedical Optics is a very broad field, requiring knowledge in a number of areas. Below we list links to resources that we have found to be helpful in our research; some are not in optics, but relate to research we are doing. If you have any suggested links, feel free to contact us and we will take a look at the site (N.B this is not for advertising purposes).
BIOMEDICAL OPTICS RESEARCH CENTERS
Oregon Medical Laser Center
A research medical clinic similar in theme to the Beckman Laser Institute: the application of lasers to medical problems. This site features some well-known scientists in biomedical optics, as well as many online resources such as optical spectra, radiative transport software and educational materials.
B & W Tek has a nice (and growing) tutorial on spectrometer basics. Current topics include slits, gratings, optical fibers and detectors. Worth reading.
HISTOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY
San Antonio Breast Cancer Research Symposium
Comprehensive conference on virtually all areas of breast cancer (clinical, molecular, medical technology, advocacy). We try to attend every year.
UC Irvine Breast Cancer Research Page
Information for patients, as well as information about the many clinical research trials happening at UC Irvine.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Orange County Affiliate
Active breast cancer advocacy organization, most know for the “Race for the Cure” each fall at Fashion Island. Plan on going this year!
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HISTORY
The life of Arnold Beckman
A fairly thorough histiory of the man who revolutionized biomedical sciences (provided by the Chemical Heritage Foundation). Arnold Beckman and his foundation generously supported the creation of the Beckman Laser Institute, as well as several other Academic Research centers throughout the US.
